| All About Frederick
Frederick County is a wonderful, extremely
diverse community of 200,000, which offers
everything you could find in a big city
while still retaining a welcoming small-town
atmosphere.
Frederick City is Maryland’s second-largest
city (behind Baltimore) and boasts a beautiful
historic Main Street downtown with unusual
shops, outstanding restaurants, an Arts
district, bed and breakfasts, live theater,
one of the best collections of antique
shops in the mid-Atlantic, and street after
street of beautiful 18th, 19th and early
20th Century homes.
Frederick is 40 miles west of Washington
and Baltimore, and has been a major crossroads
of history, especially during the Civil
War. Armies of the North and the South
passed through Frederick many times on
their way to battles at Antietam, South
Mountain and Gettysburg. The Battle of
the Monocacy, fought a few miles southeast
of Frederick city, was a pivotal fight
that could have changed the course of the
war if the South had been able to cross
the river and march on Washington. Visit
the TOURISM website here for more on Frederick’s
history, and after you get here, visit
the TOURISM center and take the walking
tour, go to the National Civil War Medicine
Museum, and walk the streets that Francis
Scott Key walked.
Home to many major industries, Frederick
County is a rapidly growing economic and
high-tech center. The Chamber’s web
site will have much information on businesses
in Frederick. The County’s largest
employer is Ft. Detrick, which, along with
its military and national communications
functions, is base for the National Cancer
Institute and the United States Army Medical
Research & Materiel Command.
Academically, Frederick County has Hood
College, consistently ranked as one of
the best Liberal Arts Colleges in the country,
Frederick Community College, and Mount
Saint Mary’s University.
